The Gotland Sheepskin
Gotland sheepskin is unique and incredibly beautiful. They are 100 percent natural and no color has been added to the skin in the processing. Although the sheepskin is primarily dark gray, color and curls varies. When ordering a Pelican chair made from Gotland lambskin, it is therefore important to know that each chair has a special and individual expression.
About 200 kilometers from Stockholm the Swedish island of Gotland is located in the Baltic Sea. Gotland sheep are very active and social animals that have adapted to the harsh Scandinavian climate. They are robust and thrive particularly well in large areas where they contribute to biodiversity. Their distinctive feature is their distinct grayish and curly fur.
From thick, almost wavy, to large and shiny, soft curls, every sheep is unique and no two are alike. The skin color can naturally vary from light gray to dark gray with nuances of white and black. This gives each Pelican Chair an unmistakable and individual expression, which pleasantly underlines the animalistic and characteristic character of the chair.
The Pelican Design by Finn Juhl:
The characteristic soft and organic shapes almost look like a body holding another body. When you sit down, the armchair hugs you in an inviting, friendly way. Like many of Finn Juhls later designs, the chair invites you to sit comfortably in different positions. The Pelican Chair
is produced in two versions – with or without buttons.
In hardly any of his designs does Finn Juhl’s fascination for Surrealism appear as clearly as in the Pelican Chair. It was presented at the Copenhagen Carpenters Guild Exhibition in 1940 and was distinguished by its unusual shape and stable legs.
Finn Juhl usually named his furniture after the year it was designed, but over time the nickname “Pelican” caught on. Very few were made over time and the chair was almost forgotten until it was rediscovered and relaunched in 2001.
