The Grasshopper Design by Finn Juhl:
The Grasshopper armchair was designed and exhibited by Finn Juhl as early as 1938. In its time, the armchair was considered a rather daring piece of furniture. Its very special extravagance is particularly evident in comparison to the otherwise “heavy” and traditional furniture that was presented and produced at the time.
The Grasshopper was one of Finn Juhl’s first attempts to express his artistic freedom in the form of furniture. The chair is also the first in a long line of designs that would manifest Finn Juhl as one of the greatest furniture designers of all time.
In contrast to his contemporary colleagues, Finn Juhl was neither a trained carpenter nor a furniture designer, but a trained architect. His lack of technical knowledge most likely contributed to the fact that his furniture oozed artistic freedom and expressiveness.
Finn Juhl did not allow himself to be restricted by the possible or impossible – and only with the help of master carpenter Niels Vodder were Finn Juhl’s rudimentary drawings translated into physical designs and realized. Despite its apparent simplicity, the Grasshopper is extremely difficult to construct due to its tricky angles, joints and complex shapes.
The Grasshopper is available in oak and walnut and is available in various fabrics or leathers.
