Architect Made: Kristian Vedel’s Bird Family

In 1959, Kristian Vedel designed his charming Bird Family, which includes children, parents, and grandparents. Although only the small bird went into production, it quickly became one of the most successful Danish wooden products of the 1950s.

Today, the entire expressive Bird Family has been reintroduced. Each piece is handcrafted by a small turner in Denmark and is made exclusively from high-quality smoked and natural oak wood. By tilting their heads in nearly any direction, the birds can express a wide range of emotions—happy, sad, curious, attentive, and more.

The bodies can be flipped upside down to represent either a male or female bird.
