Carl Hansen & Søn – HJW37 The Pendant

Hans J. Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark. In 1936, at the age of 22, he attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, later returning as a teacher. In 1943, he opened his own design studio and created the Chinese Chair, which, along with his 1949 Round Chair, became the foundation for many of his subsequent chairs. The Round Chair became known simply as The Chair. While The Chair is arguably the most iconic piece of Wegner’s career, the Wishbone Chair is widely considered his most successful design.

Although Wegner is best known for his chairs, he was also a brilliant lighting designer, applying the same perfection and innovative approach to his lighting designs. One notable creation is The Pendant, designed in 1962 and continuously produced since then. The Pendant is a true classic and masterpiece of design and craftsmanship. Wegner designed it to be height adjustable, incorporating a unique construction with a handle that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. This feature allows users to raise or lower the lamp without touching and potentially damaging the shade.

The Wegner Pendant is available in a color palette inspired by the classic colors of Copenhagen, seen in the city’s doors, windows, facades, benches, and more. Additionally, Carl Hansen & Søn has paired these colors with hangers in shiny silver or shiny gold, referencing the stainless steel or brass components found on Copenhagen’s doors and gates.
