Carl Hansen & Søn – HJW38 Opala Pendant Mini

Hans J. Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark. At the age of 22, he attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen in 1936, later returning as a teacher. In 1943, he opened his own design studio and created the Chinese Chair. This chair, along with his 1949 Round Chair, laid the foundation for many of his subsequent designs. The Round Chair became widely known as The Chair. Although The Chair is likely the most iconic piece of Wegner’s career, the Wishbone Chair is often regarded as his most successful design.

Wegner was not only renowned for his chairs but also for his exceptional lighting designs, which he approached with the same level of perfection and innovation. In the early 1970s, he designed the Opala range for Hotel Scandinavia in Copenhagen. This range features a distinct, almost futuristic design, superb light quality, and the finest materials and craftsmanship, making it a classic for hotels, public spaces, offices, and private homes. Wegner’s original drawings specified three sizes for the Opala pendant. The MIDI size was intended for Hotel Scandinavia, while the smallest version, the Opala Mini, was first launched in 2007.
