Carl Hansen & Søn – VLA62 Radio House Mirror:
The VLA62 Radio House Mirror was designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen in 1945 exclusively for the Royal Retiring Room at the Radio House in Copenhagen, now home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Carl Hansen & Søn is reintroducing the mirror in collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, making it available to the public for the first time.
The Radio House Mirror, true to Vilhelm Lauritzen’s and the Radio House’s distinctive style, features a frame of organic, solid oak that beautifully complements the mirror. Relaunching in its original 175 cm full-length size, the mirror is designed to hang on the wall and is suitable for private homes as well as public spaces like theatres, hotels, shops, and retail areas.
Lauritzen originally designed the Radio House Mirror for the Royal Retiring Room, which served as the royal chambers connected to the royal box in the Radio House. The Royal Retiring Room is a comprehensive work of art, with all its furniture designed by Lauritzen specifically for the space. The Radio House, one of Lauritzen’s most famous buildings, was created for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation during the era when radio was the pinnacle of modern technology. The building is internationally renowned, showcasing Lauritzen’s expertise in detailing and material awareness, with fixtures and fittings from lamps to bannisters and door handles all designed by him. Lauritzen’s work is characterized by organic shapes and materials, which is evident in the Radio House furniture, where everything fits into a cohesive organic concept. Today, the halls are still filled with music from the students of the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
Crafted from FSC-certified solid, oiled oak, this contemporary full-length mirror is made from eight carved pieces matched to ensure a continuous grain pattern. Hand-sanded for a smooth, tactile finish, the deep, concave frame features organic corners that seem to embrace the mirror. Oak, cherished for its durability, has been a staple of Scandinavian design for centuries, synonymous with quality, longevity, and traditional craftsmanship. Known for its lively appearance and strong grain pattern, oak’s high tannic acid content makes it exceptionally tough, ideal for furniture-making. Over time, treated oak’s distinctive grain pattern remains visible, and its color evolves into a warm yellowish-brown tone.
About Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen (1894 – 1984):
Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen, a pivotal figure in Danish Modernism, was one of Denmark’s most influential architects. His works exemplify the revolutionary “form follows function” ethos. Despite his passion for studying butterflies, Lauritzen focused on architecture as an applied art meant for everyone, not just the elite.
Among his notable projects are the first terminal of Copenhagen Airport (now the Vilhelm Lauritzen Terminal, 1939), the Radio House in Frederiksberg (1945), Vega – Folkets Hus in Copenhagen (1956), and the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1960). In 1922, he founded Tegnestuen Vilhelm Lauritzen, now Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, and also designed various interior elements, including door handles, ashtrays, railings, lamps, sofas, and chairs.
