Fredericia Furniture – The Chaconia Chair, designed by Nanna Ditzel in 1962, was produced for the first time by Fredericia Furniture in 2023 in a limited edition of only 100 pieces. Known as the “Grand dame of Danish design,” Ditzel’s progressive and forward-thinking approach has left a lasting impact on Danish design. Originally named “Lounge Chair,” it has been renamed Chaconia in tribute to Trinidad’s national flower. Made from Oregon pine and finished with a lacquer to resemble Ditzel’s original works, it features Hallingdal in color 200, giving it an elegant golden look. Each chair in this exclusive edition includes a brass plate engraved with its production number and Nanna Ditzel’s signature.

The Chaconia Chair by Nanna Ditzel

The Chaconia Chair, designed by Nanna Ditzel in 1962, was presented at the Cabinetmaker’s Guild exhibition in Copenhagen that same year but was never put into production. Known as the “Grand dame of Danish design,” Nanna Ditzel (1923-2005) was a progressive and forward-thinking designer whose work played a pivotal role in the renewal of Danish design in the 1990s. Her postmodernist attitude and rebellion against tradition, even well into her 70s, solidified her legacy in the design world.

Ditzel was not only ambitious but also deeply concerned with the ways we sit, believing that comfortable furniture could inspire new ways of thinking and living. She had an incredible talent for transforming artistic concepts into highly functional and usable furniture.

To commemorate Ditzel, Fredericia has finally put the Chaconia Chair into production for the first time in a curated variant limited to 100 pieces. Originally named “Lounge Chair,” it has been renamed Chaconia in tribute to Trinidad’s national flower, reflecting the island state that provided Ditzel with significant inspiration.

The Oregon pine used in the chair has been finished with a lacquer specially developed to resemble Ditzel’s original works from 1962. It is produced with Hallingdal in colour 200, a light mélange hue, giving the chair an elegant golden look. This limited edition features a brass plate engraved with the production number and Nanna Ditzel’s signature.
