Enigma
Enigma was designed by the Japanese designer Shoichi Uchiyama in 2003. Uchiyama presented Louis Poulsen with a design idea that broke down the traditional chandelier concept into sleek layers of concentric circles. This included floating shades held by thin wires, giving the lamp a transparent and light appearance. The name “Enigma” means “mystery” and refers to the fact that the shades appear to float when illuminated from a distance. The idea fit well with Louis Poulsen’s product philosophy and was a reinterpretation of the multi-shade system — Japanese grace combined with Scandinavian simplicity. In 2018, the original aluminum version was complemented with a new black version, expanding the decorative possibilities of the design and creating a calm visual and atmospheric effect by shaping and channeling the light.
Shoichi Uchiyama
Uchiyama’s fundamental concept is to create ideal light distribution and avoid unpleasant glare by controlling the light based on an in-depth understanding of the properties of the light source. He believes that particularly reviewing the effect of the light fixture is key to achieving high-quality lighting. By preparing the lamp with full-scale models, he examines the intensity and color of the light, the shadows cast on objects, and the aesthetic appearance of the lamp. Such a rigorous design process results in the creation of a simple and functional form, giving his products the minimalist beauty of Japanese tradition.
Uchiyama’s lamps, created through the precise calculation of light, are a testament to his design philosophy. For his unique designs, he has been awarded the iF Award in Germany and the Good Design Award in Japan.
