PH 2-1 Glass Pendant – Louis Poulsen

The PH 2/1 pendant lamp is part of a 30-model series, including three outdoor lamps. Henningsen developed a system of around 1,000 variations, including table, floor, wall lamps, and chandeliers, which gained popularity in the 1930s. Early metal models had painted interiors—white for diffuse light, gold for warmth, and silver for cool tones. Later, glass shades allowed light to spread both downward and into the room.

The PH design:

Poul Henningsen designed the 3-part lampshade in 1925/26, with the first models exhibited in Paris through his collaboration with Louis Poulsen, which lasted until Henningsen’s death in 1967. His goal was to create glare-free lighting with soft shadows and precise illumination.The PH 2/1 pendant lamp is part of a 30-model series, including three outdoor lamps. Henningsen developed a system of around 1,000 variations, including table, floor, wall lamps, and chandeliers, which gained popularity in the 1930s. Early metal models had painted interiors—white for diffuse light, gold for warmth, and silver for cool tones. Later, glass shades allowed light to spread both downward and into the room.Henningsen was the first to study light scientifically, using the logarithmic spiral to achieve even light distribution and controlled glare. The model numbers indicate shade sizes, with the PH 2/1 featuring a 20 cm top shade and smaller lower segments for lower-hanging pendant lamps.
