The PP Møbler – pp505 Cow Horn Chair Great luxury sometimes comes in small packages. This is one of Wegner’s smallest chairs, but it is an amazing work of art. Designed in 1952, the Cow Horn Chair is the immediate successor to Wegner’s groundbreaking pp501/pp503 Round Chair. The continuity in form and philosophy is obvious, but it was designed for a different purpose: Wegner created a smaller chair that fits easily under the table, making it more suitable for dining room settings.

Das PP Møbler – pp505 Cow Horn Chair Design von Hans J.Wegner

Paying homage to the breathtaking beauty of wood carved by hand into organic forms, Wegner decided to create a compact chair with back and armrests made of two large pieces of solid wood joined in the middle.
The joint must be aligned with the grain of the wood with a kind of tenon and could also be doweled, but in this case Wegner decided not to hide the inevitable joint, but to emphasize it and make it a decorative feature of the design. To achieve the full visible effect, Wegner used wood in a contrasting color. This original idea would later become a characteristic trademark of many of his works and is an important example of his design approach.
